To prepare our students for college, our ELA reading standards require us to teach 50% literature (fiction) and 50% informational text (non-fiction) in 4th grade.
Reading Literature (Fiction) - 50%
RL.4.1 - Refer to explicit details and examples in a piece of literature when explaining what the text says and when answering questions about the text and use clues to draw inferences about the story
RL.4.2 - Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem
RL.4.2 - Summarize literature
RL.4.3 - Describe in detail characters, setting, and plot in a story or drama
RL.4.4 - Understand allusions found in Greek Mythology (Achilles Heel, Pandora's Box, Midas Touch, etc.)
RL.4.5 - Explain differences between poems (verse, rhythm, meter), drama (cast, setting, stage directions, dialogue), and prose (story format)
RL.4.6 - Determine a story's point of view (1st and 3rd person narration)
RL.4.7 - Make connections between text and a visual or oral presentation of the text
RL.4.9 - Compare and contrast stories
RL.4.10 - Read and comprehend 4th grade literature (stories, drama, and poems)
Reading Informational Text (Non-Fiction) - 50%
RI.4.1 - Refer to explicit details and examples from an informational text when explaining what the text says and when answering questions about the text and use clues in the text to draw inferences about the information presented
RI.4.2 - Determine the main idea of informational text and explain how it is supported by key details
RI.4.2 - Summarize informational text
RI.4.3 - Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text
RI.4.4 - Determine the meaning of academic vocabulary related to 4th grade subject areas (latitude & longitude, economy, photosynthesis, erosion, etc.)
RI.4.5 - Identify the overall text structure of informational text (chronological order, compare & contrast, cause & effect, problem & solution, description)
RI.4.6 - Compare and contrast primary and secondary accounts of events or topics in informational text
RI.4.7 - Interpret text features presented visually in informational text or electronically (charts, graphs, diagrams, maps, time lines, bold print, icons, electronic menus, etc.) to help us better understand the text
RI.4.8 - Explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text
RI.4.10 - Read and comprehend 4th grade informational text (history, science, and technical texts)
RI.4.9 - Integrate information from two texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably
